One Develops The Oddest Habits
So after a grueling over-24-hour airport/flight experience I have made it back home to the States. It’s good to be back, good to see my parents, good to see my dogs, good in general. In an earlier post I mentioned a few things I was worrying about in terms of readjustment. So far none of those have been the case, but a few odd habits have popped up…
For some reason I can’t get used to the light switches in my house. I guess this is because of how different those in my apartment in Spain were. Every time I reach to turn on a light I end up screwing up, and have to consciously try again.
Another thing I can’t get used to is how the toilets flush here. In Spain there is a little bar (I guess one would call it that) on top of the toilet that you pull up to release the water, flushing everything down. Here we have the little handles on the front left of the toilet, and it seems I can’t get used to using them. Almost every time I use the bathroom I reach for the top of the toilet, but obviously there is nothing there.
Aside from that nothing seems too weird. When I first heard a bunch of Americans speaking I think I finally understood, at least to an extend, how our language sounds to foreigners. It’s a sort of whinyish or nasalyish sound with lots of “aahhhs” in there. Know that sounds weird, but it’s the only way I can describe it.
Alrighty, tomorrow I promise to return with a post of some actual substance, but now it’s time to head downstairs for a long-missed home cooked meal.
