Highlights from Granada

As much as I would like to put in a post with more substance, I just don’t have the time right now, so the highlights from my weekend in Granada will have to suffice. If you haven’t seen the photos you should definitely give them a look, I have some more to post, but when I can upload them depends solely upon the internet connection here.

So, the best parts of Granada, in no particular order…

• The Alhambra - I’m really glad I finally got to see it; ever since reading Washington Irving’s book I have wanted to visit. And though I didn’t get to see the whole thing, what I did see was impressive. What amazed me most was the amount of planning and thought that must have gone into its construction, the drainage system is incredibly extensive, but unintrusive at the same time.
• $1.50 Beer and Tapa - Normally when we go to one of these places, where you technically are paying only for the beer and getting the tapa “free,” we just get a tiny little something to eat with our beer. So if you actually want to have dinner you have to order something separately. Not so in Granada. The tapas you get here are huge; think small hamburger, coleslaw, and fries, plus beer…all for $1.50. Twice we went out and had dinner for $3.00, we couldn’t eat anymore than two tapas.
• Bigger Bars/Clubs - One of the constant problems in Malaga is that things are small, you are almost always without much room no matter where you go. In Granada, probably because of the fact that there are so many tourists there, the sites are much bigger and, in my opinion, much nicer. The prices are about the same too.
• History - One thing I like most about Spain and other European countries is that they have so much more history than the states. Walking around Granada we kept seeing these huge buildings from the 15th/16th/17th century, and it never ceased to amaze me. And it’s not like they’re not used anymore either, most of them remain open, whether they be hospitals, churches, colleges, or whatever.
• Good Company - Self-explanatory.

So that’s that. Once I finish getting everything sorted out here I’ll get back to “better blogging.” I have some ideas in my head for a new Wordpress theme, though I don’t know if I will use it here. For now I am just putting together what I can in my spare time, experimenting with the various possible uses of AJAX. But now it’s time to get to some schoolwork…
