Hello, world

This is my new little spot on the web.

It feels a bit like returning to the past, and I guess that's part of the draw of the idea of the small web. As with so many things in life, I didn't fully appreciate the value of writing things until the habit of writing things had long since left my routine. That, coupled with some serious early-web nostalgia led me to stand this site up.

The explosion of AI in the past few years has made so much possible for builders and thinkers. I have recaptured the spirit of "have an idea, try to build it" that I had early in my career - so much feels possible, even within the time and responsibility constraints a 40-something family man has.

But this, and perhaps this is sympotmatic of AI in general, has also led to a bit of a feeling of mania (in the manic sense). My brain can only keep up with so many GPUs doing so many tasks before things start to feel a bit crazy.

Books and writing have become my latest retreat and reprieve. These aren't new things to me - I was a huge reader growing up and through early adulthood, and as a philosophy major writing was a daily companion. But there was a long period in which the only reading I was doing was via the internet, and the only writing via email. Coming back to books and writing feels very comforting in this age of AI.

And so perhaps it's appropriate that this return to books and writing converges with me starting a site that looks and feels a bit like something out of a past time.
